Synopsis
Clara Bright's emotional, confusing, and mysterious journey begins in Saint Louis following the financial crisis of 1907. Within days she loses her father following his bank's failure, and finds herself locked up in a mental institution. Clara faces the emotional shock of going from pampered rich girl to serving as a maid at a boarding house.
Impulsively she links up with and marries a mysterious cowboy who claims he has deeds to both a cold mine and a cattle ranch between Denver and Colorado Springs. Turns out the claims to the mine and the homestead weren't what they seem, but they finally end up on a lonely quarter section homestead in 1910, following two years of working in Colorado Springs.
What follows is a story filled with puzzling conversations, clandestine relationships, betrayal, emotional torment, and a gradual awakening to the truth. Clara discovers the truth in the end, but also realizes that the clues were always there, had she been emotionally ready to accept reality.
