This book was created to recognize my first mentors and to thank the current ones who have patiently taught and encouraged me to learn deeply about the disciplines of bird hunting and being an active participant.
When I asked the very talented photographer Kelley Hamby to share some time with me and capture visually what I experience, he graciously accepted. That to me is a gracious gift. His ability to capture the mundane as an artistic expression is unparalleled. I am eternally grateful for his contribution to this work.
I wrote this book at 7100 feet at a camp in the Targhee National Forest, on my way into another adventure. I have stops planned in Canada, Eastern Oregon, and Nevada to hunt with Texas – the spaniel you'll see immortalized in these images – and my current bird hunting mentors. Together we will celebrate and toast my dad, their dads and mentors, and continue the tradition of men afield.
My overarching goal for this work is to provide an aspirational view of upland bird hunting for you, the reader, and honor the men that taught. I hope it creates an interest or reinforces an interest in upland bird hunting for you, your family and future generations as a way to engage with nature.
