Synopsis
During and just after the Revolution, in 1779, 1787 and 1787, New York levied taxes. The Cambridge District in upstate New York, in the northeast corner of Albany County (now in Washington County), carried out its required duties, resulting in tax lists now held by the New York State Archives. The area was just north of where the Battle of Bennington had been fought 16 August 1777 during the Burgoyne Campaign. The residents - even the same families - had members on both sides of the conflict. The tax lists give a window into fluid situation during and shortly after the events that resulted in Loyalists fleeing to Canada and having their Cambridge District estates confiscated. They also provide the details of real and personal estate valuations that give a window into the wealth and the wealthy of the District. This book gives images of the tax lists, their transcription and an index to them. It provides the context for the taxes and information about the wealthiest men and women and their wealth.
