Synopsis
“I love murder,” 62-year-old Annabel Wordsworth often says. She refers, of course, to fictional murder, the kind she finds in the mystery novels she’s forever reading. The thought of actual harm to anyone repels her loving heart; yet for years, she has dreamed of helping to solve a real homicide. However, when it involves the death of a dear friend, her opinion quickly changes. Instead of the thrill she expects to find, she finds it heartbreakingly tragic.
In a peaceful Nebraska town in 1995, the last thing anyone expects is for someone to shoot their beloved Doctor Grant Markessen. Grant lingers long enough to call Annabel for help and to speak two cryptic phrases as he dies in her arms. But what do they mean? And why did he call her? What help did he think she could be? She has no answers, but one thing is certain, she must not, she will not, let him down. With determined resolution, she solemnly vows to search until she uncovers the truth. With the grudging assistance of her sheriff brother, Archie Beacon, and to the consternation of her husband, Reverend Peter Wordsworth, she discovers long hidden secrets, witnesses a second murder, and experiences deep heartache as she forges her way towards the solution.
