Inspired by our popular Zoom theatre retreats, the Jesuit Media Lab presents this read-aloud version of Charles Dickens' Christmas classic, perfect to perform together with friends or family on a cold winter's night. The text of the novella is presented here formatted as a play so it's easy to choose parts and read it aloud. We abridged the work based on Dickens' own personal prompt copy of "A Christmas Carol," which he used in public readings throughout his life.
Get a few people together in person or on your favorite internet conferencing platform — five people or eight or a dozen or more, it doesn't matter — set aside two hours, grab some copies of this edition, and bring "A Christmas Carol" to life in your living room, kitchen or parish hall.
Our edition includes a simple how-to guide and two essays by our Jesuit Media Lab fellows to accompany the text. The first essay, by literature scholar Michael O'Connell, is a look at "A Christmas Carol" from an Ignatian perspective. The second essay, by playwright and journalist Renée D. Roden, is about theatre and reading aloud within the Catholic tradition.
