This monograph describes the experiences of an airman, Wallace Garretson Imhoff, in training for the Great War (World War I), through a series of letters to his wife Sarah. These letters allow glimpses into what it took to become a pilot in one of the deadliest conflicts of our country. We follow him through flight training school with the U.S. Army Air Corps (long before there was a U.S. Air Force). Wallace first attended ground training school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then was based at the air training school at Rich Field in Waco Texas. Finally he served in Europe with the AEF (American Expeditionary Forces) after the war in Scotland, England and France.
