My parents chose the Yorkshire Pennines to make a start on their farming dream. My father, a man of many actions but few words, was as relentless as the passing seasons. This driven man, blessed with a unique understanding of his animals and supported by my mother and his growing family, brought his farming dream to life with common sense and hard work.

My brothers and I learned to 'plough our own furrow', to be 'getting on', trying and sometimes failing, but not giving up.

Sometimes, walking the fields with Dad, I thought I could be a farmer. But warm summer evenings among the cows, did not reflect the harsh reality that farming is really all about life and death.
