Synopsis

This second edition of MacLeod: A Clan History tells how one name came to hold both a chief who hunted Prince Charles in 1746 and the old tenant who carried the Prince to safety.

In April 1746 Donald MacLeod of Galtrigill, a Skye tenant aged 68, refused to carry the Prince's letters to the chief of MacLeod, who was out with his men searching for him. Donald found a boat and took the Prince across the Minch through a night of storm. Taken prisoner and reminded of the 30,000 pounds on the Prince's head, he answered that he would not have let a hair of him be touched for all England and Scotland.

The book follows the name forward from the island charters of 1343: Alasdair Crotach's tomb at Rodel, the smothering on Eigg in 1577, Neil MacLeod's last stand on the sea stack of Berisay, Montrose taken at Ardvreck, the ship William that carried about a hundred people from Skye and Harris to be sold in 1739, and Raasay burned after Culloden. Then Johnson and Boswell at Dunvegan, the Fairy Flag, the clearing of Rodel, the chief who ruined himself feeding his people in the famine of 1847, and the crofters of Glendale who won back their valley.

With a list of the chiefs and their houses, places to visit, a chronology, a guide to finding MacLeod ancestors and, in print, a full index.

For readers who carry the name, in any spelling, and want to know what happened to the people who carried it before them.
