Bophuthatswana was established as homeland for Tswana people in South Africa in 1977. Despite proclaimed independence it never gained international recognition and in 1994. was reintegrated into South Africa. While often mentioned as historic curiosity, or derogatory named "bantustan", its history and legacy is interesting, showing that even in difficult geopolitical circumstances great things could be achieved. It shines as example of first self-governing entity of black african people in area built by black people themselves, not as continuation of former colonial entity like most modern african states.
