Synopsis

The Boer goat is widely recognized today as one of the most economically important and genetically superior meat goat breeds in the world. Its origin is deeply rooted in the semi-arid and rugged terrains of South Africa, where indigenous African goats were selectively bred by Dutch farmers (known as Boers, meaning "farmers" in Dutch/Afrikaans) to create a robust animal well-suited to the country's challenging climate and nutritional limitations.
The earliest foundations of the Boer goat date back to the early 1900s, when South African ranchers began to notice that certain native goats displayed superior size, faster growth, and better carcass quality. These goats were often interbred with imported breeds such as Indian Jamnapari and European dairy goats, resulting in a composite breed that retained the hardiness and disease resistance of native stock while gaining significant improvements in muscle mass, meat yield, and docility.
By the 1950s, the breed had become increasingly standardized. The South African Boer Goat Breeders' Association was established to develop breed standards and promote the systematic improvement of Boer goats through scientific breeding. Selection criteria focused on traits like fertility, mothering ability, weight gain, conformation, and resistance to local parasites and diseases.
