In 1810, a young French-Canadian clerk named Gabriel Franchere accepted a position with The Pacific Fur Company and then set sail for the edge of the known world on a voyage to the Oregon wilderness. Once there, he was part of a crew tasked to build the first permanent settle in the new Oregon territory. What awaited him was treachery, tragedy and heart break that would test the limits of his courage.
Torn between love and ambition, Gabriel Franchere leaves behind everything he knows in Montreal to chase fortune aboard The Tonquin, a ship setting sail from New York on a journey that will change him forever. It was a leap of faith; as he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Once Gabriel met the crew and left New York City’s harbor there was no turning back.
Soon after leaving shore, Gabriel sensed the storm brewing below deck-a clash of pride and power between the autocratic ship’s captain and a crew seething beneath the weight of his command. At one stop he was nearly left by the captain to die, saved only by the courage of his friends and his own will to live. He would later mourn eight of them friends lost to the brutal demands of the voyage and the blatant disregard of life by the captain.
With danger around every corner, Gabriel must shed any insecurities he has left if he wants to one day return to his fiancé in Montreal. He has to risk his very life if he is to be the successful man he was destined to become.
