Mississippi Mud Turtles are endemic to parts of the south-central United States, specifically ranging from the lower Mississippi Valley through states such as Mississippi, Louisiana, eastern Texas, Arkansas, western Tennessee, and southern Missouri. They inhabit freshwater environments such as shallow streams, ditches, bayous, cypress swamps, marshes, and oxbow lakes. These are generally slow-moving bodies of water with soft, muddy bottoms and ample vegetation conditions that align with their burrowing behavior and secretive nature.
These turtles are semi-aquatic and demonstrate seasonal terrestrial behavior. In spring and summer, they are primarily aquatic, frequently seen foraging at the bottom of water bodies for aquatic invertebrates, decaying matter, and vegetation. However, during dry seasons or in colder climates, they are known to leave water bodies in search of new habitat or to burrow into leaf litter, soil, or mud to aestivate or hibernate.
