Synopsis

Consciousness is the elephant in the room. It is how we see the world and how we interpret it, and how we see ourselves and interpret that too. In many ways, it is what we are, and it is our world: it is our very existence. It is, to paraphrase Fatboy Slim (Cook, Q, (1999)), Right Here, Right Now. It is the best seat in the house – indeed, it is the only seat in the house we are going to get, so we should try to appreciate it.

Consciousness cries out for an explanation. Long before humanity had explanations for gravity, evolution, light or much else, we had explanations for our own conscious existence, namely in the thousands of belief systems that sprang up in human societies. They served the purpose of a model, however inaccurate, of a cruel and arbitrary world in which we humans had no tools to investigate its true makeup.

This book attempts a concise, modern and readable description of the state of consciousness thought, science and philosophy, and proposes that the self-model theory is the most plausible one.
