Synopsis
On a small, ordinary planet around an unremarkable star, people lie down to sleep and unknowingly create universes. Every dream is a fork in reality; every “what if” is a seed that blooms into a full world, written backwards from a single moment. The beings who do this are not wise, ancient deities. They are commuters, parents, insomniacs scrolling their feeds at 3 a.m. They are you.
Dream Gods follows four of them across the branches of the multiverse they keep throwing into existence. Tammy Mitchell is six years old, addicted to Numberblocks and TikTok, and on the edge of discovering that the monsters under her bed live in a universe she accidentally made. Aiden Blyde’s fantasies of purity and power become a world that eventually turns on him. Relisha Williamson, sleeping in a Manila alley, builds a clean, careful utopia every night—and one version of that world decides to come and get her. Laurence Catcher just wants a decent night’s rest; instead his nightmares give rise to the Guardian, a cross-world defender fighting off full-scale incursions from science-fiction armies, demons, and things from worse places than hell.
In each story, the people inside the dreamed universes live under skies that only exist because someone, somewhere else, closed their eyes. Some are saved. Some are ruined. Some learn what they are. Most never will.
