Ask a physicist, a philosopher, a priest, and an atheist, and you will get radically different answers. Some say time is an absolute, ticking like a cosmic metronome from the beginning of the universe. Others insist time is nothing but an illusion, a way for human minds to measure change. Still others claim that time is real but relative — stretching, bending, and even standing still under the right circumstances. At its simplest, time seems to be the measure of change. A flower blooming, a child growing, a mountain eroding — these all happen in time and are often marked by time.
