Synopsis

The principles of thermodynamics have long been known to determine how chemical reactions occur, as well as many other macro level phenomena such as geological and meteorological processes, physiologic functions, the evolution of species and the metabolism of ecosystems. What has yet to be described however is how these same thermodynamic principles are used by all of us every time we use language.
We like to characterize our species Homo sapiens, with terms such as intelligent, sentient, self-aware, and conscious, egotistically emphasizing that we are uniquely gifted with these traits. This book challenges that notion with a radical take on the origin and nature of consciousness by way of an expansive new paradigm underlying the structure and function of language.
These gifts we think we alone possess are mediated through our use of language. Language is how we think, speak, believe in things and form our perceptions of reality and spirituality. These gifts however, are not uniquely ours. They are emergent properties of the thermodynamics underlying all "things" in the universe, from subatomic particles through atomic and molecular entities, through virtually all life forms, to the ends of the expanding event horizon. These gifts are the property of all matter and energy up and down the entire thermodynamic spectrum. Not only do these thermodynamic principles orchestrate the compilation of all physical matter that surrounds us, comprises and nourishes us, and literally gives us "life", they also render the difficult journey across the divide that separates physical reality from metaaphysical reality, into a seamless transition. This is after all, how we get life from non-life; we were always wrong in failing to recognize the entire universe is alive.
The rules by which we've all gotten here are the same for each level of consciousness. They are the laws of thermodynamics. Not surprisingly then, the means by which we describe these rules to ourselves and each other, the means by which we study them in all the venues we do, and employ them to create the mythos of who we are as individuals and as a species, is also by way of thermodynamics, specificically this mysterious "thermodynamics of language". Engaging and pursuing this new paradigm opens us up to far reaching potentials on how we might view reality, spirituality and consciousness.
At the same time that recognizing this emergent property of language is exciting, it also presents us with a potentially devastating conundrum. On the one hand we somehow know how to broadcast and execute, with great precision, the complex computations of "far from equilibrium thermodynamics" every time we think, speak, write, read or express our belief in something. Yet on the other hand we also know next to nothing about the actual laws of thermodynamics, nor do we have any real sense that we're utilizing them as the means by which we navigate our precious consciousness. What are we to do with this, when we finally realize we're not just conscious, we're out of control.
