Synopsis
The sea around Isla Mujeres on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is one of the most productive in the world for sport fishermen. It has sailfish and marlin in abundance, as well as bottom fish and many other pelagic species. Its annual migration of whale sharks where visitors can swim among them must be enjoyed to be believed. The water is beautiful, the island is charming, and the people are friendly. After experiencing adventures in fishing throughout the Bahamas Islands, Florida Keys, and the Hawaiian Islands, the east coast of Mexico is calling.
Isla Mujeres is just offshore of the Yucatan Peninsula which means the influence of drug cartels cannot be ignored. But not every cartel boss is a monster, and some use their resources to do good works. Some also live for the day they can leave their lawless lives behind and join society as respectable citizens, philanthropists, husbands and fathers, to do good for others and keep their families safe. In Cartel, four such bosses strive to make that transition.
When Max Carson and his sons, P.J. and Gaffer, rescue the daughter of a prominent rancher from kidnappers, they enter a different world. In this world men fight for their lives every day and have regrets they cannot run from. But a solution presents itself for these men when the President of Mexico declares amnesty for some classes of bosses, conditioned upon strict guidelines and a commitment to use their considerable resources to perform generous acts of philanthropy.
The Carsons are there to help make it happen. Cartel bosses pour millions of dollars into a program conceived for the purpose of giving young men and women an alternative to the gangs. This program has a curriculum where interested students can get exposure to training that prepares them for more useful, less dangerous careers.
As the cartel bosses learn to understand how propound of changes they can accomplish for the students they serve, they learn that they too have choices.
