Marta’s Heart is the first book in a YA trilogy. Books 2 and 3 are called Ivy’s Heart and Glady’s Heart, respectively. Marta, who has five siblings, will eventually have six children of her own and Ivette, or Ivy, is her youngest daughter. Gladys, or Glady, is Marta’s granddaughter and Ivy’s younger daughter. Ivy will birth four children, two girls and two boys. The family will suffer deaths and tragedies, but they will continue to prevail and flourish during the time period that begins after the Civil War and continues into the decade following the Great War.
The year is 1870, as six children, ages 7 to 15, bear the burden and responsibility of nursing their only parent, Eliza Weber, after their father is killed in war. They live just north of New York City, in a home that their deceased grandfather built, as they plot ways to keep a roof over their heads. They will be compelled to sell their mother’s silverware to pay the taxes on their home, while the roof continues to leak, as Marta, the oldest daughter, searches for ways to keep the children fed. This is book 1 in a trilogy about a family who survives the aftermath of multiple wars, numerous tragedies, and a host of everyday challenges as their love and devotion to one another fans the flames of their hope and optimism.
