The Edict of Expulsion of the year 2028 tells the story of Jakob Toledano, an exemplary citizen of Amsterdam. A Sephardic Jew, he is a descendant of those expelled from Spain in 1492.
Jakob, whose family has lived in the Netherlands for hundreds of years, is a man of faith and a devoted attendant of the Portuguese Synagogue. He is also a loving father, a tender grandfather, and a respected figure in his community.
The structure of the novel is a collage of personal diaries, family stories, newspaper editorials, chronicles, and travel descriptions, revealing that Jakob is not the only protagonist—the entire Jewish community shares the stage.
The community’s peace is shattered by the resurgence of antisemitism. In football stadiums, antisemitic chants escalate into real violence. Jakob is brutally attacked and hospitalized. His personal tragedy coincides with a series of governmental decisions: first, the banning of shechita (ritual slaughter without prior stunning); then, the prohibition of brit milah (ritual circumcision)—both fundamental practices of Jewish identity.
Tension culminates in a pogrom that devastates synagogues, schools, and businesses across several cities. The Dutch Parliament, unable—or unwilling—to protect its Jewish community, decrees that since it is impossible to guarantee their safety, Jews must be “relocated” to Israel “for their own protection.”
Jakob relives the exile of his ancestors, this time not at the hands of inquisitors or Nazis, but of democratic governments and indifferent media. He must start anew, with sorrow—but also with dignity.
The Edict of Expulsion of the year 2028 combines personal narrative with historical warning. It serves as a cautionary tale that Europe may be on the path to fulfilling the words of philosopher George Santayana: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
