Synopsis

The Wasteland life of the Flatland-guardians has never been without purpose. Nor is the life that they choose to live ever without a moment of peril. But, neither is that life lacking camaraderie, nor the persistence, nor the dedication that it takes to re-Awaken a Seeker of Medicine's ancient fighting-skills. Both will and a lot of fortitude are required to mold a warrior into the Maktah that they must become to survive in the Shadow-haunted Flatlands—an inhospitable area of open desert in the arid Southwest where centuries of battling Darkness' Minions has made the Flats a place for Sisters and Brothers of Light to avoid. Unless, that is, they live there.

In this fourth book of the series, Brothers of Light recounts not only the warrior-brothers' personal trials, but their questioning of, and their search for, the legacies-bound Ways of the Ancestors. Iya and Sweet-Star, not to be forgotten, continue to confront the Darkness that followed them from the Frontera. And then, there is Dja-ne-ke'a Hawkman, the crazy-riding, nefariously condemned, ridiculed, and oft-belittled runner-sister who leaps into and out of Shadow on her Otherworld-jumping stallion Sky-Foot. She, too, rides the Wasteland. Racing to survive the icy pursuit from a living, breathing, horridly sentient Darkness, the diminutive Medicine-rider has run out of options. So, where does a Sister of Light turn when she is in search of safe-haven? To her Brothers of Light, of course. And to their tiny, knolltop safehouse on the Eastern Flats.

Shatwa Hei and his Sisters and Brothers of Light, standing in that half-in-Shadow, thinly veiled cusp between real-time and Shadow, perpetually are on guard against the Dark Beings that skulk in, and pursue them from, that ever-present realm of Otherworld, which lies on the other side of that veil-thin barrier separating real-time from Shadow. Every morning and every evening at twilight during their half-light watches, the Flatland-guardians ponder whether they are half-sane, or half-crazy for trying to keep the Wasteland free of the Dark Ones. But then, they walk. And they run. And they fight. And then, they rise up and do it all over again.
