As we enter the season that ends our liturgical year, the Church asks us to consider what will happen to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done. Everything we do in this life – the love we experience, the religion we practice, the nature and recreation we enjoy, the work we engage in – is all meant to lead us toward our eternal end.
Mercifully, there is a way to meditate upon our earthly deaths that need not frighten us, but rather offers us the opportunity to meet with eager anticipation the eternal life that is to come! This way is by examining our deaths through the lens of God’s holy Word. The Safe Haven: Scriptural Reflections for the Heart and Home (Ordinary Time, Weeks 29–34) will help us do just this.
In these final weeks of the Church year, let us be mindful of the glorious words which Jesus bestows on us as we reflect on the meaning of life and death:
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. (John 12:24)
