In the second half of the 19th century and early 1900s, Toxteth was characterised by a proliferation of court dwellings and two-up, two-down terraced houses. In cramped conditions like these drink-fuelled violence often prevailed, resulting in death. This book details over thirty violent deaths from that time, including that of Liverpool's first police officer to be killed on duty, parents who murdered their children and innocent bystanders murdered for trying to help someone out. Mental health was also a factor in many of the killings described in this book, with heartbreaking tales of people killing much-loved family members during a bout of insanity, then spending decades in institutions. This is the author's fourth book on the topic of murders in the Liverpool region.
