If you are interested in learning about vintage tube-type devices, such as radios and power amplifiers, there is no better place to start than studying the electronic components of which they are made. In my Amazon book, "Vacuum Tubes – From Scratch," I thoroughly cover the theory and operation of vacuum tubes. In this book, I cover resistors, capacitors, and inductors, which, in one form or another, comprise the remaining components of vintage tube-type devices. As we explore circuits that utilize these components, I introduce the basic elements of circuit theory that tell you how the components function together. As a "From Scratch" book, I start with the electron and develop the theory of each component and circuit as they are introduced. Where appropriate, I provide examples of how the components are used in vintage tube-type devices along with circuit simulations as a means of verifying the theory. In the end, your troubleshooting skills will be significantly enhanced by learning (1) how the components function in the various stages of the device, (2) what failure modes to look for, and (3) how component failure affects the voltage and currents in the circuits. In short, you should be better prepared to make the most of vintage tube-type electronics.
