A few months ago I started thinking about the use of A.I. in the classroom and how much students are starting to use A.I. to do their homework for them. Then I started wondering about what the intelligence level of future generations will look like if students no longer have to think for themselves. That is what led me to start thinking about projects / assignments that could be assigned that would be difficult for students to simply use A.I. to complete and then turn in, and so the creation of this book.
Now that we have had a taste of what A.I, can do, I think it is safe to say that our students are going to use A.I. whenever they can; and we would be remiss not to teach our students how and when it's appropriate to use A.I. I don't think that we should negate the positive value that A.I. can bring to the world, but I do believe that the world of Education must now evolve. We must insist that students take the knowledge that they have received, (wether through their own reading or through asking A.I.) and physically do something with that information to prove they have learned and understand the material.
I no longer ask students to turn in a Power Point presentation or a Google Slide presentation on anything, since I watched A.I. create a beauttiful 15-slide presentation in under 2 minutes on a random topic I gave it! Assignments like that no longer show that the student learned anything, except for how to program A.I. to do their work for them. So I have decided to put together assignments that would require an extra step (or two) beyond what A.I. can do for them, in order to receive any credit for the assignment / project.
I have put together the assignment grids at the beginning of each chapter in such a manner that a teacher could have students select a row or a column of assignments and the student would learn about an assortment of topics from that unit, that it could be their work for the whole unit. These assignments should each take several days to complete, they are not an overnight assignment, as they require more time than that to complete properly.
The units in this 130-page book include:
Pre-History
Western River Valley Civilizations
Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome
The Islamic World
Ancient Asia
The Middle Ages
I hope this book helps you to navigate the flood waters of A.I. in the classroom this school year.
