Synopsis

In the soot-stained streets of Pinecone, Kentucky, 1924, Lyla Ann Byrn is a woman trapped between worlds. A free-thinking Irish immigrant working in a mob-run speakeasy, she is scoffed at by local men and burdened by a family on the brink of ruin. Her father gambles their future away, while her brother's reckless thievery draws the ire of the town's most dangerous men. Enter Grady: a coal miner who is as awkward as he is handsome. He cares for the canaries in the dark depths of the earth, but he carries a secret far heavier than coal. Grady is not of this world. A telepathic refugee from a war-torn Mars, he possesses powers that could save Lyla-or expose him to a world that fears anything it cannot understand. When the ruthless mobster Sly Simon marks Lyla's family for death, Grady must decide if his love for a human woman is worth revealing his true nature. In a pulse-pounding climax where the grit of a slaughterhouse meets the power of the stars, two outsiders must fight for a chance to escape the gravity of their pasts. From author Marsena Shane comes a spellbinding fusion of historical adventure and extraterrestrial wonder, proving that love is the most universal force of all.
