There is knowledge gained from looking around, observing the world in its endlessly varied phenomena. There is knowledge gained from talking to people, learning about their work, reading their books. There is knowledge gained from the analysis of information. Then there is knowledge gained without knowing from whence it comes, ideas that appear on the landscape of thought unbidden, their presence seeming to be an offering, and on impulse, we accept it. This is received knowledge. It comes from knowledge that is unknown, as a gift. If it takes a lifetime to understand, we persevere, and are rewarded by the understanding.
Dr. Albaugh’s series, entitled Epistemology, currently has three volumes in the works. Received Knowledge is volume number one. He is an independent philosopher, living in Des Moines, Iowa with his wife, Lynda, and their animals. They have four children. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and taught philosophy for many years.
