Synopsis
Suppose You Could Reset Your Destiny …
With his goodbye notes written and his bequests arranged, Shay is making a last nostalgic visit to his childhood neighbourhood. As he glumly traverses his old council estate, he is reminded how all his problems stem from the fact that, when he was twelve, his family were evicted and transferred to a sink estate several miles away. He pulsates with his wish that this traumatic upheaval had never happened.
Heading back to where his car is parked, he notices odd things: vehicles with metal bumpers and tax discs, cigarettes in the hands of every passer-by, outmoded fashions, landscape changes … Then he encounters a young boy who he realises with a jolt is him. He is back in 1976, with no idea how to get out.
Shay decides to turn the insane, inexplicable situation in which he finds himself to the advantage of the person he thinks of as Young Shay. Plunging fully into mid-seventies culture, he plots to manipulate and influence life opportunities for his younger self so that he will not end up like the older, tormented version – him.
In His Day is a head trip and a nostalgia trip but above all an endlessly intriguing, page-turning romp.
