Joyce Peters is an assistant librarian in the city of Manchester during World War Two. She endures the hardships of being at war bravely like the rest of the population. Her main ways to escape the humdrum of life are books and her weekly treat to the cinema with a friend where she imagines herself being a spy or secret agent. The only shadow over her life is that her beloved brother cannot be with her as he is fighting for his country in the air force. One Saturday afternoon in Manchester a handsome stranger mistakes her for another woman. He doggedly pursues her until she gets the police involved. The same man is quickly forgotten until he turns up at her home with a request for her to travel to London and speak to Military Intelligence. Soon her life is transported to a world of spies and double agents and a woman who looks exactly like her in appearance but the complete opposite of Joyce in character and morals. Most importantly, can Joyce maintain her Christian faith through all the horrors of war she is confronted with or allow hatred to darken her soul?
