Synopsis
Darkness never saw herself as a slave girl. She wanted more in life. She wanted what 'the white folk gots." When she accidentally tears Miss Abigail's grandmother's tablecloth that came "all the way from England," Abigail demands that her husband punish the twelve-year-old girl with a whipping. Marse Thomas finds it difficult to do. In the end, Darkness angrily leaves the farm, without plans, and without any knowledge of the ways of the outside world. Her two-week 'vacation' from slavery gives her more than she bargained for.
