Excerpt:

A great shadow was thrown over the courtyard, though the fox could not see the creature that cast it.

“Who goes there?” the fox called as he approached, squinting through the snowstorm.

“Lord Harold, sir?” squeaked a small voice some way below him.

The fox looked down and focused on a quivering mouse.

“Mabel?” Harold asked. “What are you doing out here?”

“It’s King Edward, sir,” said Mabel. The diminutive mousemaid was dressed in her white nurse’s apron and began rubbing her tiny paws together to quell her shivering. “He’s awake.”

“Awake?” Harold said breathlessly, rushing over to her side. She took a few pawsteps back and looked up at him nervously, the fire from the palace shimmering in her large black eyes. He knelt lower towards her and gave an encouraging smile. “Go on, Mabel.”

“He has said many strange things, sir. But when his mind was clear, he asked for you.”

Harold grappled his silver windswept whiskers, curling either end into a smile, a fashion he had maintained since they had first sprouted.

“I see. Then lead me to him right away.”

Mabel nodded profusely and scampered into the warmth of the palace on all fours. Ordinarily, Harold might have scolded the mouse for her lack of decorum as he strode after her on his two back paws, as was proper. Even Harold, however, could ignore it on this occasion – the king was awake, and the future of England lay in the balance.

Edward had no cubs of his own. If he were to die, who would lead the kingdom after him?

The crown had many claimants. Too many. The fox believed there would be claws out and blood spilled before this was over.
