The Shadow Fleet was sleek, sharp, and almost entirely invisible, save for the faint shimmer of its gravimetric shield bending light around its hull. Inside the dimly lit command bridge, Commander Alina Voss stared at the holographic display of the galaxy, her sharp blue eyes tracing the red lines of conflict that crisscrossed the known star systems.
War had scarred this galaxy for generations. Peace, as the United Stellar Alliance called it, was nothing more than a fragile truce between empires who would sooner knife each other in the dark than share the spoils of the stars. And yet, Alina knew better than most that the galaxy was on the brink of something worse. It wasn’t the open battles or trade blockades she feared—it was the shadows. The whispers of warlords, the untraceable strikes on neutral systems, the Dominion Syndicate’s covert arms race. Something big was coming, and the Alliance wasn’t ready.
But that was where the Shadow Fleet came in.
“Commander Voss,” a voice crackled from behind her. It was Kade Draven, her second-in-command, a towering figure with the build of a brawler and the precision of a surgeon. “We’ve received the final approval from High Command. Operation Phantom Strike is greenlit.”
Alina didn’t turn to face him. Her hands rested on the edges of the console as she stared into the holographic projection. “Greenlit,” she echoed, her voice flat. The weight of those words hung heavy. It was one thing to train a crew in secret, to prepare them for missions they couldn’t talk about even in their own thoughts. It was another thing entirely to unleash them.
“Are the team briefings complete?” she asked.
Draven nodded. “Everyone’s ready. The crew is nervous, though. First mission jitters.”
“They should be nervous,” Alina said sharply, turning to face him. “Nerves keep you alive. Overconfidence gets you killed.”
