In the spring of 2017, Matthew Crompton loaded a bicycle with a tent, a camera, and a single burning question—and set off alone into the mountains of Tibet.
Over the next four months, he would ride more than 5,000 kilometres across some of the most remote and politically fraught regions of China and Central Asia. Along the way, he’d be detained by police in Xinjiang, stumble into a Tajik military base, survive a reverse mugging in Kazakhstan, and drag his bike on a crumbling goat track over a 14,000-foot pass in Kyrgyzstan. He’d even be rescued on a desolate Tibetan road by a motorcycle-riding monk.
But this is more than just a cracking adventure yarn. Roads Toward a Supreme Fiction is a meditation on the deeper truths we chase through hard travel: What do we seek when we leave home? How does discomfort clarify our lives? And can solitude, hardship, and motion become a spiritual path of their own?
Part travel memoir, part philosophical exploration, this is a story for anyone drawn to the far edges of the map—and the even more mysterious terrain within.
