Seventeen-year-old Rhett Steamrun has always wanted more—more than the orphanage walls, more than scavenging and tinkering with scraps, and more than merely surviving. Gifted with an extraordinary mechanical talent, Rhett travels to Kingsland, the booming center of industrial innovation, where opportunity, fame, and fortune seem almost within reach.
But Kingsland has plans of its own.
Soon after arriving, Rhett is robbed and left penniless, forcing him to rely on his wits and his inventions to survive. His search for answers draws him into the lives of unlikely allies: an enigmatic inventor, a sharp-tongued pickpocket, and the most astonishing creation he has ever encountered—an automaton with a mind of her own.
As Rhett begins to find his place among this unexpected found family, a powerful rival inventor offers him everything he’s ever dreamed of: recognition, resources, and the chance to build machines that could change the world. Accepting the offer, however, may mean betraying the people who helped him stand on his own.
Caught between ambition and loyalty, Rhett must decide what truly defines success—and whether chasing greatness is worth the cost.
