Governments exist to secure stability, justice, and opportunity for their citizens. The consensus seems to be, at least, that’s what they should be doing. And as kids growing up in America, that’s what we were taught.
Yet, the historical examples in this book reveal a disturbing and recurring pattern: when those in power prioritize ideology, control, or personal gain over the well-being of their populace, the result is often catastrophic. And the occurrence of such oppressive, and sometimes even brutal treatment of indigenous citizens has been far more frequent, and for that matter far more oppressive, than we naïve kids from the 50s and 60s thought them to be. Maybe we just weren’t paying attention.
Central to the book’s argument is the assumption, derived from an analysis of the 16 examples in Chapter 1, that there are six primary avenues of governmental abuse that are paramount, and therefore need to be monitored carefully by any society that wants to remain free of such abuse. Fortunately, the methods of such attacks are recognizable and can therefore be resisted . . . if citizens pay attention and remain vigilant.
The aforementioned abuse is divisive, destructive, and ultimately deadly. The power behind this abuse is far greater than most of us realize, and the zeal with which its abuse is handed down is both unnerving and a bit hard to understand. And the modern dispensers of governmental abuse have refined the various forms of attach into a clear and actionable ideology.
This book describes the threat modern nations face such that It makes clear the hateful and all-consuming nature of the underlying abuse, as well as the absolute necessity of resisting it if a nation expects to survive the relentless and destructive attacks of a government drunken with power and filled with rage against all things civil. The recent Trump presidential victory is a welcome reprieve, but the battle against governmental abuse is nowhere near over!
