Synopsis

Compulsive shopping, or oniomania, is an impulse control disorder characterized by an uncontrollable urge to buy things, even when there is no real need or desire for the items purchased. This behavior can lead to serious financial, social and emotional consequences.
The causes of compulsive shopping are not yet fully understood, but several factors are believed to be involved, including:
Psychological factors: low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, difficulty managing negative emotions.
Biological factors: possible alterations in the brain circuits related to reward.
Social factors: cultural pressure to consume, ease of access to credit.
