Synopsis

Water sanitation can achieve an improvement in people's health, and quality of life in developing countries through the improvement of the environment. The new sewage treatment plant and sewerage in Iquitos, offers the opportunity to determine the immediate effects of the pollution on water bodies surrounding this tropical city. The use of coliform cultures, together with biological oxygen demand were chosen to assess the efficiency of the treatment plant and recovery rates at point source discharges. Samples were taken from 16 locations; 8 storm water discharges around the city, samples upstream and downstream of Iquitos.
