This book originated in a series of articles written between 2014 and 2019 for ‘Saints Alive’, the parish magazine of All Saints Church in Kingston-upon-Thames. The church, which has stood for centuries in the centre of this ancient town, has a long association with the East Surrey Regiment and houses its Regimental Memorial Chapel, along with many individual commemorations of members of the Regiment. The first article was written to commemorate the centenary of the 1st Battalion’s involvement in the first action of the War, at the battle of Mons, which was also marked by a special service at All Saints at 12.00 noon on 23rd August, the exact centenary of the Battalion’s first engagement. The following six chapters follow the Regiment from its mobilization in August 1914 to the Armistice on 11th November 1918, through the Retreat from Mons, Christmas Day in the trenches in 1914, then the battles of the Ypres Salient, including the 'Defence of Hill 60' in April 1915 when the Regiment won three Victoria Crosses in a single day, and the catastrophic first day of the Somme on 1st July 1915 , when the famous 'football charge' was carried out by men of the Regiment, A final (eighth) chapter, which did not appear in ‘Saints Alive’, recounts the story of the 1st Battalion’s involvement in the almost completely forgotten North Russia campaign of 1919.
