Personally, I was raised in a very conservative, legalistic belief system where the only memorable mention of the Holy Spirit was when someone was being baptized, or when the missionaries came to visit and the Great Commission was preached. Mathew 28:19-20 was the common text for both. Other than those, I have no memory of learning about the Holy Spirit at all.
Now that I look back, I know that there was a combination of ignorance and fear: Ignorance about who and what the Holy Spirit was and what He actually did; Fear because of being afraid of the excesses of charismatic Pentecostalism.
Over the past many years, I have slowly come to the realization of what role the Holy Spirit has played, is playing, and will yet play in the life of those who worship the Triune God. But more importantly, I have come to know the Holy Spirit as a Person—distinct, vital, active, comprehensive, intimate—and as Someone who loves me every bit as much as does Jesus Christ and God the Father.
As I read through many of the texts, I have stopped numerous times to pray and ask for forgiveness for ignoring the Holy Spirit for so long; for more surrender to His working in me and in those around me; and for more of Him to fulfill the desires of His own heart in unity with my Heavenly Father and my Savior and King, Jesus Christ.
It is my prayer that you, too, will be amazed at how extensive the work of the Holy Spirit is in lives and in our world, and that you will come to know and understand our Triune God ever better.
