It is an examination of his evolving identities as gay, Jewish, and left-wing, beginning at a time when homosexuality was regarded as a perversion, antisemitism was a factor of daily life, and all Americans, whatever their status, were encouraged to identify themselves as middle-class. Likosky is particularly adept in illustrating how the personal and the political intertwine, as he is in recording his odyssey from a tribal provincialism to a global cosmopolitanism.
