Synopsis

The book describes a style of garden design that positions repetitive structure and backbone (base plantings and features) without feeling too formal or stuffy. It requires less effort to maintain than a formal garden. Yet it does provide structure to catch the eye with a sense of planned space. And allows for colorful fill plants (flowers) set between the base shrubs and trees to lighten and brighten the garden. So, you might ask… how did I decide on this style?
When we moved into our current home, I liked formal structured gardens like those I have seen at Longwood Gardens and the Biltmore Estate. But I was shortly to become a father, working full time, and attending college three or four nights a week. I did not have the time to maintain a truly formal garden. Thus, I developed the style I am writing about in this book… the Non-Symmetrical Symmetrical garden structure. It follows the customary rule of low to high plantings from front to back… except where it is appropriate to tuck a “hidden space” behind a taller planting. And it brings a less rigid formality to the garden by positioning a matching set of plants on both sides of the garden… but not precisely aligned spatially to mirror one side to the other. It brings balance and comfort to the senses without the work required to look like a grand tattoo of perfectly marching soldiers.
Before I go forward, I must tell you that I am not a Master Gardener; I have no horticultural degrees or formal training… rather I have learned by doing, by failing, and by succeeding. I have been fortunate in being honored 3 times with my city’s Home Beautiful Award. More importantly, my family, friends, guests, and I enjoy the peace, beauty, and solitude the garden provides. It has also become my special place to sit and talk with my God and to give Him thanks for his creation.
Make your garden as large and beautiful as you would like and enjoy it greatly. Or as small as time, energy, money, and desire permit. Start with a basic plan to which fill plantings, fun, and art can be added as you see a vision, are gifted plants, and happen to find special things to work into your garden.
Experiment with different plants in various locations as you learn the micro climates of your space. Don’t worry about making mistakes… we all do… most are only a shovel away from correction.
Be creative, get your hands dirty, and your spirit refreshed.
