Synopsis

Raveling’s early life was marked by hardship and resilience. He did not begin playing basketball until his ninth-grade year, but his talent quickly became evident. Raised in Washington, D.C., he attended St. Michael’s, a Catholic boarding school in Pennsylvania, thanks to the help of his grandmother’s employer. Tragedy struck early in his life when his father passed away when he was just nine years old, and his mother was institutionalized when he was 13. Despite these challenges, academics became a cornerstone of his life, shaping his future endeavors.

Raveling went on to attend Villanova University near Philadelphia, where he excelled as a basketball player for the Wildcats. Known for his rebounding prowess, he set single-game and season rebounding records during his time at Villanova. As team captain in his senior year, he led the Wildcats to consecutive appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1959 and 1960. His contributions to the team were recognized when he was featured on the cover of the 1960 media guide. Though drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in the eighth round of the 1960 NBA Draft, Raveling chose to pursue coaching and other opportunities instead.
