Synopsis

Salamander Man is a heartfelt and poignant story of Mohamed Idris’s search for meaning. It is narrated by Mohamed Idris, a twenty-one-year-old Malay man who, prior to contracting polio as a four-year-old, was able to frolic throughout his village with other children.

Unable to use his legs, Idris is forced to crawl throughout his village with his legs dragging behind him. His legs leave a trail on the ground like that of a salamander’s tail. He is teased, bullied, and ostracized by other children. They taunt him with the name Salamander Man. And in the Kuala Terengganu of the 1940s, where the Terengganu River empties its muddy secrets into the South China Sea, you are what you are called.

Like other children, Idris desires to have a best friend and attend school. But he is denied admission to school by the local school administrator who declares him “disgusting, repulsive, and a distraction.” It falls upon his father and mother to school him at home.

Discouraged and initially finding learning difficult, Idris resists homeschooling. His parent's refusal to give up on him and with help from an older cousin, he buckles down to work and learns the basics of reading, writing, and computing. Then by the intercession of three unlikely men, a Malay Islamic scholar, a Chinese Catholic priest, and an English banker, Idris is introduced to and masters Eastern and Western classical literature. Idris thereby escorts the reader back through time and space from Asia to Europe spanning eight centuries.

Idris shares his inner most thoughts and feelings in an intimate dialogue with the reader as he progresses through puberty and adolescence. He has the same urges, desires, and needs as any other boy, yet others’ attitudes toward him preclude him from having what he wants most. As a young adult, Idris desires what each of us desire, a person to love with all his being who will love him above all others in return. When he is unable to find a mate by conventional means, his father with edging from his mother provides a most unusual twenty-first birthday present to him at the Westwind Hotel.

Salamander Man is a tragic yet beautiful story of Iris's search for meaning.
