Synopsis

Written in 1991, Lise Lyng Falkenberg’s “The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up – But Did” contributed to a renewal of the Peter Pan research. In the book Falkenberg analyses the five stories that Scots author Sir J. M. Barrie wrote about Peter Pan in the period 1902-1920 and compares them to show that both the literary story about Peter Pan as well as Peter’s "life story" undergo developments. She also examines the development in other characters such as Wendy and Captain Hook and looks at how Peter Pan’s universe grew darker over the years, as it was influenced by Barrie’s own life.

The book that was Lise Lyng Falkenberg’s thesis in Comparative Literature, is thorough, engaging and insightful, sometimes even funny. It offers a new angle to the understanding of Peter Pan and is one of the main works within the Sir J. M. Barrie / Peter Pan research.

“The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up – But Did” has been published four times in Danish and English, and the present fifth edition is the first as a paperback in English.
