In his varied career, Lynn Gunnar Johnson has been a school teacher in West Africa, an ordained minister, a race relations specialist, a community organization executive, a state director of lifelong learning, a university administrator, the president of a college and university association, and a management professor. He studied literature and philosophy at Yale, theology at Union Theological Seminary, political science at the University of New Hampshire, and university management at the University of Michigan. Lynn and his wife, Anita, reside in Delmar, New York.
