Synopsis

Claude Van der Pries, jewellery meister in Antwerp, is invited to go to Russia to make a tiara for the bride of Prince Nikolai. Initially wary, he finally agrees to go when it is pointed out to him that he could enable Jews, sent to the Pale of Settlement, to leave for safety in Antwerp.
He and his wife leave their children in the care of Catherine, their oldest daughter. She is feisty and headstrong, and would rather become a jeweller than a babysitter, but in 19th century Belgium this is not possible.
However, after being told her parents had been poisoned, she sets off to Russia accompanied by her maid and the suspicious Officer Baronov.
The novel, with a background in Belgium and Russia, contrasts the intrigue of Russian society with the life of a master jeweller.
Throughout, we are in awe by the way in which Claude, his wife Louisa and Catherine, manage to accomplish their aims, despite being very ordinary people.
The characters in the story are imaginary, but the pogroms which caused hardship and suffering to the Jews of Russia are not.
