This is Book One of A Man Without Talent. The book exists as a single kindle book, and as Book One and Book Two in paperback.
A Man WIthout Talent is an an autobiography that weaves together the narrative strands of a life, from the trauma-narrative of the family of origin, to the story of adaptation to circumstance including sexual and chemical predilections; to the professional memoir of a swashbuckling educational entrepreneur in an alien-exotic jurisdiction; to the redemption narrative of man who finds he must suffer near obliteration to finally achieve a healthy striving towards peace.
Book One follows a man who seeks to escape himself and make himself anew by travelling to China.
It describes the establishment of an English language school in Beijing in 2000, and the running of this school until 2016.
Book Two is an extended meditation on the situation of the self in time. The titular protagonist moves with his Chinese wife and their son to Galway, Ireland, where they struggle to achieve harmony, and develop a hybrid Chinese / Irish way of life. He becomes increasingly isolated from the world at large, and sinks into addiction. He tries to be a responsible husband and father, but this is impeded by obsession with past trauma.
Throughout the story the man struggles to express himself sincerely in his writing, but is unable to consider any of his work to be completed, or ready for publication, and for this reason he feels that he is a failure.
