Synopsis

USS Franklin D Roosevelt, the second of the Midway class aircraft carriers, was built to withstand combat damage anticipated in the invasion of Japan. While none of the three Midway class carriers saw combat in World War II, they nonetheless were the largest and most capable warships in the world for 10-15 years and remained very formidable warships for decades to come.
In this book, the author, a former crew member of FDR, recounts the history of the ship along with a recap of the lives of each of the men who commanded her during her 32 years of service.
Together, the ship and her skippers formed "A Commanding Presence."
Additional chapters include memories of her commissioning, the "straight deck" ship, the "angle deck" ship, her decommissioning, and the FDR Reunion, an organization dedicated to keeping the memories alive.
Also included are chapters on "What's It Like To Command An Aircraft Carrier?"; What's It Like To Land On An Aircraft Carrier?"; and "What's It Like To Work On The Flight Deck?" all written by subject matter experts.
A must read for anyone interested in Naval Aviation.
