RUN, MELOS! A Play in Nine Scenes, by Gavin Bantock
New Classic Adaptations for the Stage, Vol. 6

Osamu Dazai’s short story Run, Melos! is regarded as a classic in Japan and is very popular especially among high-school teachers and students. Even in translation, it maintains its classic stature. Its theme of steadfast friendship overcoming all odds is deeply moving and inspirational, and indeed appeals to all ages.

The increasing suspense of the story makes it an ideal vehicle for the live stage, and the audience watches with bated breath as the young Melos encounters one obstacle after another – a broken bridge and a turbulent river to be crossed, a band of brigands to be quelled single-handledly, and the sheer exhaustion Melos suffers as he runs mile after mile, almost dying of thirst, coughing blood and collapsing scarcely a mile from his destination, and only just able to make a final desperate effort to save his friend from death by crucifixion.

Based on an ancient Greek legend and the much later ballad by the German writer Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), the story shows how the evil machinations of corrupt power are overcome by the moral strength of friendship and Christian purity of spirit.
