Synopsis

The Kid is a novel about growing up in the 1950s in a world of an error-free bible, hell-fire damnation, and altar calls.

The Kid describes his personal history, including time spent in the Entire Sanctified Holiness Church of God in Christ in the Heights, in a hilarious, disturbing, naive, and, at times, tender manner. His holiness-fundamentalist church of the 1950s adheres to a literal reading of an error-free Bible, preaches hellfire and damnation, loves altar calls, frowns on thinking, gossips and argues, demands obedience, perfection and separation from the world--and, is tough on Catholics. The kid has questions about sin, sex, and Scripture, but gets shamed for asking, so he's convinced something is wrong with him. He fears God is out to kill him and will make it look like an accident (so he'll die unprepared) since hidden within is a forbidden desire to experience rock and roll, dancing, carnivals, movies--and Pauline.

In a whorehouse he encounters Miss Sugar Pie, and after a few titillating moments, he does what he does best: rattles off Scripture then discovers she's Catholic, owns a Bible, and reads it. He's stunned, thinking, how can this be? God loves Catholics and harlots? God has a surprise up his sleeve--forming a community of "outcasts" that the kid never imagined possible?

Thomas Woudstra is a retired ordained minister and psychotherapist living with his wife, Nancee, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
