Synopsis

Over the course of a few decades, the so–called Evangelicals have become somewhat well–known in the German–speaking world. In their self–portrayal, they often claim to belong to a "third branch" of the Reformation. Is this categorisation really justified? It may be true to some extent, but the Evangelicals present themselves as a range of different shades. However, this is no obstacle to the fact that they have somehow joined together in a network of alliances, whereby each affiliated congregation can cultivate its own peculiarities to a greater or lesser extent. The term "free church" seems to have several dimensions.

Here, Evangelical Free Churches are examined from the perspective of the Reformation, whose best–known protagonists were Martin Luther and Jean Calvin, both of whom, interestingly, were initially not theologians but lawyers, even if Luther was only a trainee. This work sheds light on the most diverse aspects of this topic.
